Richard Twilley

Richard Twilley is a partner in Athorus, an intellectual property law firm with attorneys in Hartford, Seattle and New York.  He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

After graduation, Twilley was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, and served as a nuclear-trained officer aboard USS Annapolis (SSN 760), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine.  On Annapolis, he completed several overseas missions, and was certified as a nuclear propulsion engineer.

Upon leaving the Navy, Twilley returned to UConn and enrolled in the School of Law; he graduated in 2004 with a juris doctor degree.  He practices in state and federal courts in Connecticut, and is a registered patent attorney.

At Athorus, Twilley provides patent prosecution, litigation and analysis services for clients ranging from solo inventors to some of the world’s largest companies.  He has obtained patents for his clients in artificial intelligence, autonomous ground vehicles, drones, cashier-less commerce, remote data centers, imaging systems, augmented reality, and various other fields.

Twilley has served UConn in many capacities, including as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of the UConn Alumni Association, and as a mentor in the University’s Leadership Legacy Experience.  He also has served on boards of the State Department of Veterans Affairs and the Glastonbury Education Foundation, and coaches his children in three sports. He lives in Glastonbury with his wife, Julie, and his two boys, Gavin and Nicholas.
