Guoan Zheng

Associate Professor

Biomedical Engineering

The research at the Smart Imaging Laboratory is focused on the development of advanced imaging and sensing tools to tackle measurement challenges in the fields of biology, medicine, and metrology. Led by Prof. Guoan Zheng, the team has contributed significant advancements in ptychography and computational imaging. A notable achievement is the development of Fourier ptychography, a technique that establishes a new standard in computational microscopy across numerous laboratories worldwide. This innovation has also been included as a chapter in Prof. Joseph Goodman’s renowned textbook, “Introduction to Fourier Optics (4th edition).”

Currently, the laboratory’s research endeavors span various areas, including ptychographic endoscopy, high-throughput microscopy and screening, super-resolution imaging, lensless coded ptychographic microscopy, Fourier ptychography, optical physiology, and label-free imaging. Since its inception in 2013, the laboratory has been supported by NIH, NSF, Connecticut Innovations, the UConn Research Excellence Program, and partnerships with multiple industry leaders.
