Kazem Kazerounian
Kazem Kazerounian joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty at the University of Connecticut’s School of Engineering in 1984, and has served as dean of the College of Engineering since 2012. As dean, he spearheaded the successful transition from the School of Engineering to the College of Engineering in 2023, elevating UConn engineering’s status and setting the stage for future development.
Kazerounian’s strategic initiatives have expanded UConn Engineering’s research enterprise, fostered educational innovation, and facilitated technology commercialization. Noteworthy achievements include a 100 percent increase in undergraduate enrollment from 2011 to 2024; the establishment of industry partnerships resulting in investments totaling hundreds of millions of dollars for research and programs; and a philanthropic focus that led to a 100 percent surge in the College’s endowment. This increase has provided crucial support for professorships, fellowships, and undergraduate scholarships.
Kazerounian’s commitment to student success and societal betterment has led to innovative curriculum development, interdisciplinary programs and initiatives enhancing diversity and gender parity. His national contributions in academia and engineering have earned him numerous awards, including the Distinguished Engineering Educator Award, in 2018. His research in kinematics, dynamics, and engineering education is showcased in over $14 million in grants, and a prolific publication record. Additionally, he has had extensive technical collaborations with industry in the United States, as well as internationally.
