Marcelle (Marty) E. Wood
Marcelle E. Wood (Marty) was raised on a dairy farm, where the family tradition was to “always help your community.” He joined the U.S. Navy Submarine Force (1964), was selected and earned a B.S. degree from Auburn University, and while deployed, taught calculus courses to sailors as a Southern Illinois University adjunct faculty member. After retiring in 1985, he enrolled in UConn’s Mechanical Engineering Department, earned his master’s degree, and served as assistant and associate department head until 2000.
During his tenure as assistant dean for Undergraduate Education and Diversity, the number of undergraduate engineering majors doubled to 12, and worked closely with department heads to ensure each major fulfilled the rigorous Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) requirements.
As UConn’s College of Engineering academic liaison to the 12 Connecticut State Community College engineering and technology departments, Wood worked to ensure the seamless transfer of credits in engineering, math and science courses taken by CSCC students would be admitted with a junior standing in UConn Engineering.
Wood also served as a member and chair of the Executive Board of the Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC). The College of Engineering started hosting the statewide event in 2001, and will host the 41st CT Invention Convention in 2024.
After semi-retirement from UConn in 2013, Wood helped establish engineering teaching faculty and staff positions at four regional campuses. This initiative enabled entering or transferring regional campus students to be admitted to engineering, receive engineering advising, counseling and courses to fulfill the ABET Certification criteria.
Wood continues his community service as a commissioner on the Ledyard Planning and Zoning Commission.
